Greg Taylor. . . Songwriter
"My playing is a combination of all that I have heard and played and experienced. My songs are an expression of all of that and more...from feelings I have, to stories I hear, to observations of the world around me, to my own take on my own bizarre ideas." Greg Taylor, 2001
Daydreaming On A Freight Train
A freight train moves with a tremendous amount of momentum. And still it must make brief stops on its journey. Greg Taylor's life in music could easily be compared to that freight train:
When he was 14, as a result of being grounded, Greg started playing guitar.....all the time! He learned to play along with his musical heroes, James Taylor, Paul Simon, and the Beatles.
Sometimes teachers influence us in ways beyond our education... In an English Literature class, his teacher, Mrs. Washburn, assigned an "art" project with the theme of the Canterbury Tales. Feeling uncertain about his ability with the visual arts, he protested and asked if he could write a song using the Canterbury Tales as the theme. Mrs. Washburn said yes. The song was subtly titled "Song for an "A", and after performing it for his class, Greg received an "A" on the project. This encouraged more performing in bands, doing cover songs...as well as some of his own original songs.
Greg studied Music Engineering at the University of Miami, combining formal music study and audio engineering. Greg focused mostly on the sound engineering classes, but the music classes were invaluable to his musicianship and his openness to many different instruments and styles of music.
After college, Greg worked as a soundman, traveling the east coast and the Caribbean. He settled in Miami and formed an original band called Fish Out Of Water. They played clubs and showcases around Florida for a couple years, then moved to L.A. with $500 and a beat up Bell South telephone van. The band broke up a few years later, and Greg formed an acoustic duo with Frank Browne, toured California, and released "Best Kept Secrets" in 1993.
In 1996, Greg & his fiancé, Carol, moved to North Carolina for a job opportunity. Music was put on hold while he focused on life in a new area, with a new job. Eventually, he answered an ad for a guitarist, and performed and recorded with local singer/songwriter Kim Buchanan for a couple years.
Life changes and reflection caused another shift in Greg's life. He quit his job and went to the west coast of France for a month long "vision quest". Becoming quickly relaxed, centered, and inspired, Greg immediately began to write his own songs again. When he returned home, he performed in local coffee shops and got involved in the music community. Building a reputation for his songwriting and musicianship, Greg started teaching guitar, and music for children.
Greg is now teaching and performing in the Triangle area of North Carolina. His long anticipated first solo CD, "All In My Hands", was released in April of 2004. Greg Taylor's songs are like "daydreaming on a freight train", with powerful rhythms and harmonies that move you through thoughtful, self-exploring lyrics.
